Basant Panchami' is a Hindu festival celebrating Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art. It is celebrated throughout the India. It is celebrated every year on the fifth day (Panchami) of the Magh month according to Hindu Calander. 

Basant Panchami marks the end of the winter season. In this festival the kids are taught to write their first words according to the Hindu Custom. People usually wear yellow garments in this festival. Goddess of knowledge, Devi Saraswati is worshipped all over the country. Yellow sweets are consumed within the families. Everyone enjoy the festival with great fun and enthusiasm.

in basant panchami basant means spring and panchami means fifth dayMany Indian schools or colleges celebrate the Basant Panchami festival with enthusiasm. Some people also celebrate the Basant Panchami as a day when goddess Parvati approached the Kama to wake up Lord Shiva from long yogic meditation. This day is also called as Vasant Panchami and observed in Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat.

People mainly from Punjab celebrate the day as Basant Festival of kites. Children and adults buy “Patang” and “Dor”, some make from scratch. They fly kites in the open sky, some compete to fly it highest, some compete to cut each other “Patang Dor”. Even Punjabi Muslim from Pakistan flies kites from home rooftops during this season. Kite festival is also shown in many Bollywood movies.
