Maanji was an old Sikh woman and the author’s mother’s friend. She lived a luxurious life in Rawalpindi before partition earning her income from rented shops and had a buffalo to meet her dairy requirements. She was also very popular among and liked very much by her Muslim neighbors. Her hospitality was very great and she distributed buttermilk to her neighbors.

After partition, a horseman was stabbed to death in front of her house just because he was a Hindu. The poor beast was also not spared. This incident affected Maanji and she moved out of her two-storey house in Rawalpindi to a single room in Bombay as a refugee. Although she had lost all her possessions and savings, she neither cursed anyone nor indulged in self-pity. She continued to remain her hospitable self.
