Health depends on cleanliness and cleanliness means health. Linked so closely are two inseparable concepts. We have observed that lack of cleanliness in the surroundings have given rise to major diseases.

In 1994, plague struck the city of Surat in Gujarat. This deadly epidemic spread due to the unhygienic conditions in Surat. Dirty roads, filthy conditions in food stalls and restaurants, lack of proper sanitation and clean drinking water. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr S R Rao with his team worked hard and converted this unhygienic city to the second clean city in India. Social leadership had made it possible.

Ignorance and lack of concern for others is the reason why cleanliness is neglected in society. Though we keep our homes clean, we dirty our streets, beaches, gardens. A social leader needs to encourage  people to keep their environment clean.

The Three R's: REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE FOR A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT:

Talks and informative films will help spread the message
Provide health cards to maintain records of visits, vaccinations and doctors remarks
As a social leader committed to health, make sure that people visit health camps and vaccination centers on special vaccination days.
Work in groups and explain the importance of simple hygiene methods for a clean and healthy body and environment.
Colorful banners and posters related to health can make the awareness more interesting and attract more people to the campaign. 

The role of a social leader in the field of health also involves some very basic tasks. Good health needs a good diet and wholesome nutrition. Spreading awareness about clean drinking water and healthy food is also a requirement. People need to be educated about the fact that nutrition and exercise is cheaper than medicine and cure. Hygienically cooked meals that include vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats and proteins are a must to stay fit. 

Today the “Swach Bharat” Mission is aimed at cleanliness and health. 

We must think tidy. Our health depends on Cleanliness. A ‘Clean Nation’ is ‘A Healthy Nation’. A healthy and clean India is a ‘Happy India’.
