essay on conservation and sustainable use of Oceans and Marine resources
Answers
The degradation and unsustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources poses significant risks to business and at the same time, businesses are discovering tremendous opportunities in tackling this issue. A small but increasing number of companies have started to integrate the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources into their corporate sustainability strategy and are developing aligned policies and practices. In order to advance further action, commitment and partnerships, the private sector is invited to participate in the upcoming Ocean Conference on 5-9 June 2017.
This webinar will provide participants with an update on the process leading to the Ocean Conference and will highlight opportunities for private sector stakeholders to participate and contribute to this global effort for the implementation of SDG 14.
Explanation:
Oceans, seas and coastal areas form an integrated and essential component of the Earth’s ecosystem and are critical to sustainable development. They cover more than two-thirds of the earth’s surface and contain 97% of the planet’s water. Oceans contribute to poverty eradication by creating sustainable livelihoods and decent work. Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal resources for their livelihoods. In addition, oceans are crucial for global food security and human health. They are also the primary regulator of the global climate, an important sink for greenhouse gases and they provide us with water and the oxygen we breathe. Finally, oceans host huge reservoirs of biodiversity.
