Corrosion usually happens in metals most probably iron. It happens due to humidity(moisture in the air) + oxygen present in the air. The Iron(FE) first reacts with oxygen to for Fe2o3 (Ferric oxide) then with the moisture in the air And loads itself with water and makes rust which has a formula fe2o3.xH20. X is the amount of water consumed to form rust, it depends on the humidity in the air. Rust is a reddish brown coloured substance which is formed because of what I have just explained. Some metals like aluminium use it for their protection. When aluminium reacts with air it forms a coating over it which protects it from further rusting.
