Endangered Lions
Lions have many nicknames, like 'King of the Jungle' and 'Top of the Food Chain', because they're very powerful animals that can survive in different environments. Unfortunately, there are several different species, or types, of lions that are considered endangered. This means that the numbers of these lions are decreasing, and they could possibly become extinct, or no longer exist. There are several reasons why these lions are endangered. Let's find out why their populations are getting smaller.
Habitat Destruction:-
One of the main reasons why lions are disappearing is that their homes are being destroyed. Many endangered lions live in grassland and forest areas of Africa and India. As the human population increases, these lion habitats are destroyed in order to create more homes and buildings for people.
Do you know how many endangered species there are in this world today? There are many things that people can do to help save endangered species from becoming extinct. "Mining companies, oil companies, and large-scale agricultural operations all threaten vulnerable species to a certain degree, by nature of their extractive activities, and development of previously untouched areas of land."(Whittaker). Many different species are becoming endangered because of the things that are going on around them, their habitats are being destroyed so they don 't have anywhere to go to be safe.
There are many different species of animals that are becoming endangered or extinct, some of which are the Sage Grouse. "At least 200 protests have been filed against the federal plans to help try and save the endangered species of Sage Grouse, from every direction. The Western Energy Alliance says oil and gas development is unduly restricted.” (Peterson) Some states complain that they people have way too much say in trying to decide what happens to these birds and others think they don’t have a good enough opinion. I think people should be able to state their ideas and thoughts but I don’t think they should be able to decide what gets to happen to that species of animal.

An Endangered Species:-
Lions are vulnerable, one step from endangered, according to the IUCN Red List. There are moves in the US to put Panthera Leo on the US Endangered Species list for 2015, in an effort to prevent lion part imports from legally reaching US destinations. Animal lovers out there will be surprised to discover that the United States is a bigger threat to the population of the African lion than other factors. Erosion of habitat, sale of lion innards to Asia for remedies, tribal revenge killings for maneater behaviour, prey loss or disease, don't kill lions as fast as hunting safari parties (largely comprised of US citizens).
The next grade up from vulnerable is endangered, and globally, Panthera Leo remains classed as vulnerable. Yet, the IUCN Red List informs us "The West African subpopulation has been listed as Critically Endangered due to habitat conversion, a decline in prey caused by unsustainable hunting, and human-lion conflict. Rapid declines have also been recorded in East Africa – historically a stronghold for lions – mainly due to human-lion conflict and prey decline. Trade in bones and other body parts for traditional medicine, both within the region and in Asia, has been identified as a new, emerging threat to the species."
The West African lion is listed as critically endangered means there are less than 400 animals left and the IUCN reports there are less than 250 mature adult lions. All 47 subpopulations of species Panthera Leo are listed as vulnerable, and when added together estimates are between 23,000 and 39,000 surviving lions, IUCN list 2013.
