Environmental influences can affect the expression of genes. This can involve factors in the internal environment, such as hormones, or in the external environment, such as the effect of certain drugs and as barbiturates in acute intermittent porphyria. This disorder is characterized by attacks of abdominal pain, constipation, and psychiatric disturbances and is due to a mutation in a gene coding for an enzyme involved in heme biosynthesis. Attacks can be precipitated by certain drugs, including phenobarbital and the sulfonamides. Avoidance of these precipitating factors will result in nonpenetrance of the disorder.
