The environment in which we live includes natural resources like air, water, land, minerals, forests etc. and they play a vital role in our survival.

However, due to many reasons like land degradation, pollution of air and water, deforestation etc., the natural resources have been misused, leading to the deterioration of the environment.

Many efforts have been put in by voluntary organizations through “Environmental Movements” that has revoked and made people to adopt nonviolent actions to protect the environment.

A few of the environmental movements are:

1. Chipko Movement – in Garhwal Himalayas, 1973

2. The Silent Valley Project – In Kerala, 1978

3. Jungle Bachao Andolan – Started in the 1980s from Bihar, and spread to Jharkhand and Orissa.

4. Navdanya Movement – in 1982

5. Development Alternatives – in 1983

6. Narmada Bachao Andolan – in 1985
