My First Time Riding a Bicycle:

For something that I saw people ride with a lot of ease, I didn't know that it would be so hard and dangerous when I finally got the opportunity.

I remember the first time I got on a bicycle and got my first try on riding it - all hell broke loose. To be honest, I could have easily lost my life on that day. I learnt how to ride a bicycle quite late in life, when I was about 12 years of age. The experience was not like all other people; learning from their dad, granddad or big brother, no! I heard to learn from my friends, who were rough, careless and reckeless.

The reason why I term my friends as reckless is because my first lesson on riding a bicycle was done on a highway with vehicles moving by. The traffic on this road was not that busy, but still, there were vehicles using the road. To make things worse, we had no helmets, shoulder pads or knee pads. I guess you can already see the reason why I said, I could have easily lost my life.

So many years have gone by, but this is still fresh on my mind like it just happened yesterday. We were about four friends, all waiting for turns on the same bicycle. The bicycle belonged to one of my friends and he was already good at riding. The other two had already had the privilege of riding a couple of times hence they were not that green. I was the only rookie at the moment.

I watched with uttter amazement as they took turns riding. Shorlty after, I heard one of my friends call out to me, "hey, do you want to try?" I hesitated for a split second but the urge of the thrill was too much for me to resist.

"Sure thing," I replied. That is the moment I was handed over the bike. One my friends volunteered to help me learn. He held the bike for me as I tried to balance and pedal at the same time. Without knowing it, I was balancing, pedalling and started moving down the steep road.

Things all started going south when I realized my friend had let go of the bicycle. Here I was, a first timer on a bicycle, moving down a steep road. If you though that was bad, from nowhere, I see a vehicle approaching from a distance and fast. I was lost, I could not even remember how to apply the brakes. The only option I had was to ride into the ditch that was alongside the road and that is exactly what I did.

I still remember being in that ditch, hurt and bleeding. My friends helped me out of the ditch. I thank God I was not hurt so much or and didn't break any bones.

That was not the last time I rode that bike and it was definitely not the last time I ended up in a ditch or a bush along the road. I guess I was also reckless and careless. At the end of it, I came out an excellent bicycle rider.

Describe your experience of doing something for the first time

Before I had learned to ride the bicycle, I thought that it would be easy when I saw people riding it with ease. To be honest, I was jealous seeing the other boys in the street flying through the trails. My grandfather bought me a BSA bicycle when I was in fourth grade. I had been looking forward to getting a bicycle for a long time and it had been fulfilled. It was one of my happiest moments.

Even before taking the cycle out of the car I got onto it. I loved it. It was amazing. I started pedaling even though I was afraid and hesitant. I fell down and hit my head I was blacked out for a moment. My parents took me up and told me these were usual and to be careful from the next time. My grandfather taught how to ride the bike. It took me about two weeks to master cycling. He would always hold the back of the cycle and he left it without me knowing. I looked back to make sure he still had not left hold of the cycle. I was astonished to see that he was not there. I was riding on my own! It was another happy chapter to my life.

I was using the street near my house to learn cycling. The road was like a saddle, in between two steep sides. My parents would not let me go over there they claimed it to be dangerous to ride down the steep slope. One day without anybody noticing I slipped to the top of the slope. I got onto the bike and rode down the slope only when I noticed that the brakes were fault. I was terrified and tried my best to keep the cycle under control. My head hit the stone wall of my neighbour’s house and I could move and parents came running hearing the sound. One of my eyes were blinded and I felt dizzy. I started vomiting in the evening. I went to the hospital and by god’s grace nothing serious had happened. I have not ridden a bicycle ever since.
