Farmer suicides have emerged as a major problem in the agrarian country like India. Describing the reasons for this, clarify the seriousness of the problem.

Farmer suicide in India is a situation arising since 1990, in which more than ten thousand farmers have reported suicide reports every year. Between 1995 and 2011, in 17 years, 7 lakh, 50 thousand and 860 farmers have committed suicide. So far, the number of suicides in Maharashtra, which is said to be rich and developed in India, has crossed 50 thousand.

Regular suicides by farmers were first reported by P. Sainath, the rural affairs correspondent of the Hindi newspaper The Hindu, in the year 1990. Initially these news came from Maharashtra. Initially most of the suicides have been done by the cotton-producing farmers of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. But after seeing the data obtained from the state crime accounting office of Maharashtra, it became clear that the rate of suicides among farmers of other cash crops, including cotton, has been very high. Suicides were not only small holders but also farmers with medium and large stocks. State Governments created several investigation committees to consider this problem. Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, announced a grant of 110 billion rupees to the state government for the assistance of farmers of Vidarbha. But this problem did not stop till Maharashtra. In the subsequent years due to the agricultural crisis, farmers committed suicide in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In this view, 200 9 was the worst year so far when India's National Crime Accounts Office recorded the highest number of suicides among 17,368 farmers. The highest number of suicides was in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Most small farmers of India do farming with debt. It is necessary for the crop to be repaid. The irrigation facility in our country is available to very few farmers. Most farmers depend on rain for cultivation. Now if the monsoon is not properly done then the crop is completely destroyed. All the hard work of the farmer is ruined. Nothing remains to eat throughout the year, along with the burden of repaying debts. Failure of monsoon, drought, rise in prices, excessive burden of debt, etc. situations start a cycle of problems for the farmers. In such circumstances, they are trapped in the cycle of banks, mahajans, middlemen etc. Many farmers do not cooperate with the pressure of debt and commit suicide.

The cost of farming is increasing for farmers but the income of the farmer has decreased. The small farmer lies in the vicious cycle of debt in the face of economic turbulence. The groups supporting farmers say that farmers do not get the actual prices of grains and they have to buy very expensive seeds of Cotton.

Several farmers in India commit suicide each year. The National Crime Records Bureau of India has reported that the cases of farmer suicides in the country are higher than that in any other occupation. The cases in the state of Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are comparatively higher. A number of factors are said to be responsible for this. Some of the major reasons for farmer suicides in India include:

Inability to pay debt.Damaging of crops due to erratic weather conditions such as droughts and floods.Unfavorable government policies.Inability to meet the demands of the family.Personal issues.

The government has taken several initiatives to curb the problem. Some of these include the Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme, 2008, Maharashtra Money Lending (Regulation) Act, 2008, Relief Package 2006, and Diversify Income Sources Package 2013. Certain states have also formed groups to help farmers in distress. However, most of these initiatives are focused on providing or repaying loans rather than helping the farmers increase productivity and income and have thus yielded the desired results.

The government needs to look into the matter seriously and take effective steps to eradicate the factors leading to the farmer suicides in order to do away with this problem.
