Forgiveness is Nobler than Revenge
This world would have been a veritable paradise, if only the
virtue of forgiveness were practiced by one and all. All the wars, World Wars,
civil wars, and the war against terror would not have wreaked so much havoc of
human, animal, plant life along with the wastage of natural resources, if
forgiveness would have been used in place of revenge.
Revenge is characteristic of barbarism. Forgiveness is
divine. The best authority on forgiveness was Jesus Christ. He taught the world
the power of forgiveness. He taught his disciples: “For if you forgive men
their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not
forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
When Peter, one of his prominent disciples asked him how many times one should forgive
the offender Jesus Christ replied: “I tell you, not seven times, but
seventy-seven times.”
He not only preached forgiveness; but practiced also. On the
crucifix when he was being nailed, his painful prayer to God was: “Father,
forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
The present world is suffering from famine of forgiveness. Everyone
is just tempted to take revenge. Hence, there is so much suffering, bloodshed,
pain, injustice, stress, anxiety, and sorrow in this world. No one forgives
anyone!
One thing is crystal clear. If we really wish to evolve into
better human beings, we must practice forgiveness in dealing with others. If the
people around us are not forgiving, we must demonstrate forgiveness to them. Once
we learn the bliss of forgiving others, we will never give in to the mundane
gratification of revenge.
We must practice it with our parents, brothers, sisters,
friends and relatives. We should not allow the rage to madden us and inflict
emotional, physical, and intellectual pain on those who might have offended us
in any manner.
Always remember heaven can only be created small acts of forgiveness. The world has already seen the hell unleashed by revenge. The Wars, September 11 terrorists attacks, Iraq Conflict, Syria Conflict, race to build weapons of mass destruction, wars between India and Pakistan, etc were provoked by revenge only. Now let’s give FORGIVENESS a try as revenge could not solve the problems of mankind.
