Someone has rightly said: ‘Grades don’t measure intelligence, age does not define maturity.’ It is true grades in exams neither indicate intelligence nor efforts. For example, if a student, who has not studied much throughout the academic year, manages to do well by unfair means, that student has neither shown intelligence nor any efforts. Examination System in India suffers from many similar flaws. In many states such as Bihar and UP, students manage to score high grades without using intelligence or efforts.
Grades in exams cannot be the criterion to measure intelligence. Einstein was not a very bright student. Patrick Pringle, his biographer in his book, The Young Einstein writes about an incident in Einstein’s early life when he was expelled from a school. Einstein proved the headmaster of the school wrong by becoming world’s greatest scientist. So this theory of grades are the indicators of intelligence and efforts is full of flaws.
The grades a person gets in an exam do not always give an exact rating of his/her intelligence or efforts. There are many situations when a person who gets excellent grades in academics is not successful in practical life. This is due to lack of intelligence. The reverse also has been found to be true, wherein a person with poor academic grades in an exam have proved themselves to be quite intelligent with their practical knowledge. The lives of many renowned scientists are examples for this fact.
At times, students retort to unethical means to get good grades. In this case, they do not put in proper effort to study the subject. These students are likely to get a good grade for something they have absolutely no knowledge of.
Thus, although good grades may be considered as one of the criteria to assess a person’s intelligence and efforts, it is not wise to make the judgment based on these factors alone.
