What if the neighbors we’ve never met, and we now wave at from six feet away, became our friends?

What if all Americans had access to affordable health care? What if getting sick didn’t bankrupt anyone? What if, when sick, we could concentrate on healing instead of navigating the health insurance maze? What if we could stay home when sick instead of having to work because we had to get paid?

What if the clean air over Beijing and the clear waters in the canals of Venice inspired us to take better care of our environment?

And what if the bedrock of capitalism became “fair market” instead of “free market” and “shareholder value” no longer overrode “social responsibility”?

What if? Perhaps then this terrible loss of lives and livelihoods will not be in vain.
