A helmet is a form of protective gear worn to protect the head. More specifically, a helmet complements the skull in protecting the human brain. Ceremonial or symbolic helmets (e.g. UK policeman's helmet) without protective function are sometimes worn. Soldiers wear helmets, often made from lightweight plastic materials.
The word helmet is diminutive from helm, a medieval word for protective combat headgear.[1] The medieval great helm covers the whole head and often is accompanied with camail protecting throat and neck as well. A prime example for this effect can be seen in Australia, who has been working toward a countrywide helmet ordinance for several years. Sydney, Australia was one of the pioneers for the ordinance, but once the law was put into effect in 1992, a survey was released six months later stating the number of current cyclists had been reduced by 38 percent (Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, 2012).
