Hindi diwas is celebrated in several Hindi speaking states of India on the 14 th September since many decades. After the Independence, the states in India spoke a lot of different languages. It was intended to have a common language so that communication was better. Hindi is the official communication language for central government along with English. Hindi is the 4th largest spoken language in the World after English, Chinese, and French/Russian.
We should know that Hindi is not the national language. There are 14 (22 now) recognized Official languages in India (see the print on the currency notes).
However, to promote national unification and better communication among people, Hindi promotion activity was initiated many decades ago. On this day Hindi lovers, poets, writers and enthusiasts celebrate by conducting cultural activities. They remember the famous exponents of the language. Hindi with Devnagari lipi is the one promoted most.
There are a number of competitions for children at school and college levels. The celebrations are continuing as we need to encourage our own languages and preserve our culture. It is also to prevent the western cultures eclipsing our culture, language and traditions. Some of the events held are poetry (extempore), essay writing, poetry, shayari, jokes and funny narrations. Social media, TV channels, periodical magazine and newspapers organize competitions. People exhibit innovation in their latest literary works.
Government of India contributes to these celebrations and funds them. The president awards many titles and cash prizes to experts and scholars in Hindi who work for promotion of Hindi and national integration through Hindi. There is a Government funded Hindi Prachar Sabha and many Hindi Universities to realize this objective in the regions including non-Hindi speaking states.
There are awards like Raj Bhasha Kirti Puraskar and Raj Bhasha Gaurav Puraskar given by the President on this day in New Delhi. Government offices, ministries, departments, public sectors and Banks participate in this event every year.
