It was a chilly winter evening. The mere thought of sipping steaming hot tea with a plate full of delightful snacks sounded wonderful. I quickly grabbed my wallet and my roommate's arm and left the hostel room. Soon enough we were at the small tea stall. As humble a place as it was, the owner was a very warm person. He wore a smile on his face, even at 10 in the night. He was almost wrapping up for the day, but he couldn't refuse his regular customers. Fifteen minutes later, he left us with two cups of tea and the promised snacks.
We sipped and ate merrily, chatting up about trivial day to day events and somberly discussing issues of national importance. Time just flew by and the wind started giving us reminders about getting to bed. Yet, we did not leave the tree stumps that we were sitting on. Finally, my roommate suggested that we continue our talks in the room, for he was cold and seemed to have a backache.
We made our way back to the hostel, only to realize that almost everyone had slept. It was quite late in the night. The next discovery left us quite distressed. We had been locked out of the room. Each of us thought the other had the keys! Not quite knowing what to do, I started pacing up and down the corridor. It was then that I suddenly noticed a shadow around the corner.
It took a lot of will power to follow the shadow, who turned out to be one of our classmates. I hesitated before asking him for a favour. I had never spoken to him before. was one of those students who hardly ever spoke in class. In fact, to be very honest, he was almost non-existent until this very moment, when he seemed to be the only one who could save us from a frigid night.
Surprisingly, he broke the silence and asked me what the matter was. Then, without any delay, he asked us to come to his room. I was too overwhelmed to even thank him well enough. I slept very well that night, though it did jolt me out of my indifferent attitude towards him. It was indeed a night of awakening.
