The Importance of Literacy to Economic Development

Our economy is enhanced when learners have higher literacy levels. Effective literacy skills open the doors to more educational and employment opportunities so that people are able to pull themselves out of poverty and chronic underemployment. In our increasingly complex and rapidly changing technological world, it is essential that individuals continuously expand their knowledge and learn new skills in order to keep up with the pace of change. The BC Ministry of Advanced Education has identified that 40% of BC adults have a hard time reading a newspaper, filling out a work application form or understanding a lease; 49 % struggle to calculate a tip, create a budget, calculate sales tax, or understand credit card interest rates. So it is not surprising that currently almost a quarter of British Columbians do not have the literacy skills required to fully participate in today’s knowledge-based economy. Almost 40% of the 62,250 workers in Kelowna – Lake Country have literacy skills below the level required by their occupations

Literacy

Education is an important part of a person's upbringing. Schooling dominates many peoples' lives for much of their early years. Education is preparation for the future, and therefore it is important to acquire one before it is too late. Education gives people the tools to think logically and reason for themselves. Without education, humanity would not have left the stone age, and this essay would have never been written. However, the most important aspect of education is literacy. Literacy is important because communication skills are otherwise limited to speech, technology becomes unusable, and it is almost impossible to acquire a job.

Without the ability to read or write, a person can only communicate verbally. One cannot compose or decipher notes, texts, mail, or any other form of written communication. When there is no way to write information down, information becomes muddied and inaccurate. Think of folk tales such as The Three Little Pigs or Cinderella. These tales were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. As a result, there exist multiple versions of each story. The same thing happens with any sort of information that is not clearly written down. Very few people have perfect memory, so all information would end up becoming unclear.

When one cannot read, one cannot operate technology. Human culture is becoming increasingly digital. Technologies such as computers and phones are increasingly becoming a larger part of our lives, so it is important to be able to operate them. Communication is moving steadily toward being based more and more on electronic media, for example, e-mails, texts, and social media. These technologies operate on the assumption that the user has the ability to read. Text is used for the menus used to select options, error messages, and tutorials. Even the keyboard used to operate a computer would be completely foreign to one who cannot read. It is incredibly difficult for one to lead a successful life in today's world without making use of these machines.

Literacy also makes it possible to find an occupation. Most jobs today require some sort of reading ability, such as observing safety signs or reading a training manual. Most jobs require an application to be sent to the employer. Without literacy, it would be impossible to fill out the application. Not to mention, most jobs ask for at least a high school diploma before hiring. One cannot make it out of elementary school without reading or writing, much less go through middle school and eventually pass high school.

Literacy is the cornerstone of education as a whole, and it is highly unlikely one could find much success without being taught the art of reading and writing. Human communication without literacy is limited to speech, causing ideas to be muddled and important details to be forgotten due to the imperfection of our memories. Reading gives the people the tools to use technology effectively. This is becoming increasingly important as the lives of humans move further into the digital realm. Without literacy one cannot find, acquire, or keep a job. For these reasons, the ability to read and write is the most important aspect of one's education.

Hope it helps.........
