Importance of Voting

The Importance of Making Your Voice Heard by Voting

People often choose not to vote because they feel their vote does not count, but one vote does count in many ways. Your choice to vote or not, will have far reaching consequences on people all over the world, many of whom do not have the right to vote themselves. In local and national elections, lawmakers are elected who make laws, policies, and appointments that will have effects for years to come. The most common reason people say they do not vote is, one vote does not count, but it does. If everyone used an excuse and did not vote, what kind of government would we have?

Many people choose not to vote; they believe that this choice only has an affect on them; this is simply not the truth. Your choice not to vote has consequences for people not only in this country, but also all over the world. Many people in other countries cannot vote and some die everyday fighting for this right. In Afghanistan the first elections in many years have been recently held despite the threats of violence and disruption by the Taliban, mostly aimed at blocking a woman's right to vote. Because the United States of America is a major world power, the people who win elections now will set policies that have far-reaching effects on peoples all over the world. The President, and the cabinet he appoints set U.S. foreign policy. Your vote helps determine who will shape the policies of the U.S.A. now and in the future. Many people in this county are not happy with the decision to invade Iraq; if you do not support this decision then you should vote against the people who made it. If you choose not to vote, you are abandoning these people who do not have a voice in their own government, and who must rely on other countries to help them achieve this right

Election is the process through which people express their opinion through public voting and elect the candidates to be sent to the public offices. Elections are considered as the base of democracy as it ensures that the government chosen through election is of the people, by the people and for the people. A free and fair election showcases the signs of a healthy democracy in a country. Through election, the citizens of a country express their acceptance or denial for the government’s policies and working.

Election could be conducted for various positions and levels in a country. It could be presidential, parliamentary, for legislative assemblies or council. The elections are conducted and administered by an electoral agency which is an autonomous body entrusted with the responsibility of conducting peaceful and fair election in the country. The complete electoral process is taken care by the agency starting from registering the political parties for the election till the declaration of the election result.

Election gives the authority in the hands of the public and provides them the freedom to elect the government of their choice which will work for their growth and development. It also keeps a check on the working on the incumbent government as they have to appear before the public after the completion of their tenure.
