It is an effect of reasoning to know that a particular act or situation, which enters into our perception pr conception of an object is not essential - to know, for instance, that the act of walking, is not essential. the reason by which such knowledge is acquired, occurs indeed so early, that the operation is forgotten, but there was a time when our perceptions with without the knowledge because they had not been repeated in sufficient number to enable the mind to make the necessary comparisons.
