  INTRODUCTION:

The Indian weavers have been at the receiving end for years together.  Though the weavers were never known to be very rich, their situation worsened over time. As Sarojini Naidu points out in her poem ‘Indian Weavers’, the workers worked hard from the crack of dawn till late night, to make a livelihood. Also, it is extremely ironical that they were unable to enjoy the richness of the fabrics that they wove. Their work adorned the rich and the powerful. They themselves could not afford it.

CAUSES:

Two main events brought about a change in the fortune of the weavers- the British rule and the Industrial Revolution in England. When the British established their rule in India, they exploited India’s resources to the fullest. Initially, woven fabrics were exported to England. Gradually, they started exporting high quality cotton to England. With a steady supply of cotton available, factories were set up in England itself. The Industrial Revolution helped the British fulfill this goal as well. During the revolution, new inventions and machines came into being.

EFFECTS:

When fabric was sent to England, the weavers were at the mercy of the British and had to accept whatever little money they were offered in exchange for their hard work.  Later, the Industrial Revolution automated many processes, including weaving. Since these machines were much faster and efficient than human workers, the Indian markets were flooded with fabrics from England. The British then passed laws that restricted the Indian weavers from being able to sell their products in the Indian markets. Again, the weavers suffered.

THE PRESENT SITUATION:

Now, though the British have left, machines still exist. These machines continue to threaten the livelihood of the Indian weavers. Also, cheaper imported products are available in India, which is why most people do not prefer to buy expensive traditional fabrics. Further, a majority of the weavers are still dependent on middle men who take hefty commissions to get their products sold.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE:

The government needs to take the initiative and focus on educating the weavers about how to sell their merchandise only through government agencies or social work organizations. The general public also needs to be encouraged to contribute towards the cause of the weavers.

NOTE: Please do not mention the points as headers. These are only to guide you in writing the essay. An essay should always be written in paragraphs, WITHOUT headings.

Answer:

There are currently 6.5 million handloom weavers in India. The presence of this enormous workforce, second only in size to that of agriculture, points to the continued importance of the sector to Indian society, despite the pressures of modernization and globalization. With low import level and additional 4.8 million power loom weavers spread throughout the country, Indian cotton cultivation and yarn spinning have both by necessity grown to be large industries. This shows the demand and requirement of cotton yarn in Indian market.

Production of fine and superfine counts (40s and above) has increased. 11 - 40s count group represents 71% and hence greater efforts are required in this category. The use of cotton and synthetic fibre blends will increase as it rose to 13% in recent years. MCU5, MCU 5 VT, Surabhi, Suvin, DCH 32 are useful for blending. But fibre maturity requires attention. Good fibre strength and extensibility are important for blending to get good yarn properties. Trash content in Indian cotton has declined significantly in recent times.
