Answer:

Essay on Indian Systems of Medicine!

Every ancient civilisation developed systems of curing and preventing diseases. All of them make use of plant products in their medicines. In recent times Indian systems of medicine have been getting more and more prominence as these, unlike allopathic drugs (especially antibiotics), do not produce drastic side effects.

Indian systems of medicine (ISM) include Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and homoeopathy (AYUSH). Several institutions have been established to develop these systems in India, and there are about four lakh practitioners of ISM today.

Recognising the contribution of these non-allopathic systems to the national health, the Government of India created, in 1995, a new Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&.H) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Now it is known as the Department of AYUSH.

Research and Education:

To initiate, aid, guide, develop and coordinate scientific, research in various aspects of AYUSH, four apex research councils have been established. These are-Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS); (ii) Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM); (iii). Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH); and (iv) Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN).
