Answer:

Essay on Is Joint Family Disintegrating in India!

Different sociologists hold different views regarding disintegration of joint family system in India. One group of sociologists concludes that joint family and extended kinship ties in India have not been destroyed by various dimensions of modernisation. The prominent among them are I.P. Desai K.M. Kapadia, B.P. Agrawala, Miton Singer. It is argued that in urban and industrial cities the members of the family maintain numerous kinship ties and obligations with the members of their joint family. Researchers of this view assert that there is no indication that joint family is further disintegrating. Agrawala, in his study of Bombay Marwadis, describes that the Marwadi community has been living for centuries in different large cities all over India. He claims that it is an outstanding example of the continuance of joint family and caste system in spite of industrial technology and Western education.  Other writers have shown that men go to cities for work in the large factories. They tend to maintain their connections with their joint families in their native villages. As Iravati Karve says, they return for wives or family festivals or they retire to their villages after making some money in the city.  Milton Singer reports that “the urban and industrial members of a family maintain numerous ties and obligations with the members of the family who have remained in the ancestral village or town or have moved elsewhere.”
