There had always been discussions regarding the use of technology and whether it is a boon or a curse and I believe the world has discussed it enough. The question is, have we learned from those brainstorming sessions or discussions? Of course, we have witnessed stupendous progress at the technology front and its usage for the betterment of our lives but there are numerous things that need to be addressed.
· Has technology evolved in the right direction?
· Is technology being used for the right cause?
· Is everybody able to benefit from it?
· Have we identified the issues/problems that our planet is facing and may have to face in the future?
· Are we working in the direction to solve them?
I fail to understand that why all the nations across the globe have prioritized development of deadly weapons (nuclear, biological etc.)? The most laughable thing is that although we have cure for various diseases, we have not been able to eradicate them permanently but have developed weapons to eradicate life from this planet. Have we not learned from the past? Are we unaware of its implications? Are we so naïve? Have we solved all other issues that plague this planet?
Presence of human life is the best gift that this world possess but we are turning this gift into a curse. Don’t be shocked, it is the unfortunate harsh truth! We humans are embroiled in conflicts that takes life of innocent people including children. We have utilized our intelligence in developing killing machines and have continuously failed to value human life. What purpose does it serve? Why can’t we keep our egos aside and resolve the issues via talks? Why can’t we respect each other’s culture, thoughts and beliefs? Do we have plans to solve them? Can we solve them via technology?
I believe yes, we can solve them! Our technology has evolved and has done wonders. Many of us may not feel the same way because they were born in the age of digital revolution and artificial intelligence. But those who have witnessed the transformation, e.g. telegrams to smart phones can definitely get my point. We have traveled a long distance and have made existence of life lot easier but the question is – why our focus has shifted to developing weapons? Why can’t we think beyond our nation? Why we let historical reasons influence our decisions? Why do we segregate people? We talk about being a global citizen, but why do we just talk?!
Human life face numerous issues and problems, few of them are:
· Poverty – Almost half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day. Every second child in the world lives in poverty.
· Hunger – Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
· Disease
· Education – Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen.
· Water – Almost half of the humanity is affected by water problems.
· Depletion of natural resources
We need solution for these problems not weapons. It is the duty of developed nations and international organizations to take the lead and carve a plan. Scientific methods should be explored to fight poverty and hunger as they are the main reasons for most of the problems. Conserving the environment for future generation is another herculean yet important task that we need to work upon. The world should spend its resources to come up with solution for problems that face threat to existence of life and judicious use of technology can helps us achieve it.
