One of the most important factors in building a road is drainage. If every other aspect of the road design and construction is carried out properly but the road drainage is not well planned, designed and constructed, the road structure will inevitably lead to a premature failure.

Erosion control is an integral part of road drainage. Excessive erosion may plug culverts leading to saturations of the road pavement structure and failure of drainage systems, and finally leading to the pavement failure.

Unpaved roads are extremely vulnerable to floods, landslides, and gully erosion.

Regardless of the road drainage system in place (whether it consists of concrete surface water channels, filter drains, kerb and gullies or other), the runoff from road eventually reaches streams and /or enters the groundwater. Roads are therefore a potential source of pollution to the natural surface and subsurface waters (as well as soil). The identification and quantification of pollutants transported with the runoff is an important issue in Ethiopia where the rivers and streams are used as a source of drinking water by humans and animals as well as irrigation purposes.

In general, the levels of pollution associated with rural highway run-off have been found to be relatively low compared to urban highways and often close to the limits of detection. Under certain circumstances, however, the risk of contamination of the receiving waters and/or of aquatic habitats cannot be discarded. The main contributors to pollution have been identified as the road vehicles, road construction activities and road maintenance operations. The flowing photos show sample outlet structures.
