resource for kids. In this article, we are exploring one of the very
important objects around us i.e., Means of Transport. Through this
article, kids will gain knowledge about different types of transports
and their importance in our life.
Before invention of wheel, one group of early man would remain isolated from other communities. They could move only in a walking distance area. The invention of wheel had changed the early man life, entirely. His social region had also expanded, with time. As time passed by, early man changed to a civilized person and refined the design of wheels. Earlier, it was made with wood but nowadays, rubber and steel used to make better wheels and we have also improved to better Means of Transport now. Bullock carts and pony of earlier time are now replaced by buses, cars, scooter, cycle etc. Earlier, man could only ride on horses, elephant, camel, bullock cart and handmade boats but we can also travel in air and space now.

Our conveyances are also known as vehicle as well as Means of transport. Now, we have new and very fast means of transports. Today, we can go almost any place in the world. The means of transport have made our world a very small and common place to live in. Rocket and satellite made it possible to go beyond our atmosphere and to travel around the earth, in space. Human has put his step on heavenly bodies and moon also. Even we have sent rover (a robot) on planet Mars, by using very advance satellite. Making of international space station has also become possible with use of advance satellites.
Modes of transportation are used for mobility of goods and services, for movement of people. They have also helped in tapping the interiors of the country. They have resulted in greater connectivity. They have resulted in connecting rural with urban areas and have contributed in the process of national; integration.
They can be classified in the following:
Land:
Roadways - It is an important mode of transportation for the mobility of goods and people for short and medium distances. They are cheaper to construct and maintain as compared with railways
It provides door to door service thereby reducing the overall cost of loading and unloading.They connect fields with markets, factories and farms
Roadways can be classified in the following:
a. Golden Quadrilateral Super Highways
b. National highways
c. State highways
d. District roads
e. Other roads which includes rural roads
f. Border Roads
Railways can be classified : Rail Transport is the most convenient mode of transportation . It helps in reducing regional disparities by connecting regions and transporting commodities. It accelerates the development of industry and agriculture sectors of our economy

c. Narrow gauge
Pipelines: Pipelines , for long have been used to transport water. They can be used by the government to transport crude oil, natural gas, petroleum products, to industries and thermal plants. It helps in reaching to interiors and remote regions.
Setting up of pipelines has enabled the government to set up refineries in the interiors of the country
Air: Domestic and international airways which indeed is the fastest mode of transportation
Water:
Inland water ways: Waterways found in the inner parts of the country in the form of rivers, canals, lakes are known as inland waterways.
They are the cheapest means of transport within a country and are helpful in carrying heavy and bulky goods.
They are indeed fuel efficient and Eco friendly means of transportation. Besides that there are overseas which connects various countries and continents.
