Explanation:

The professor added that most students were anxious and worried for their future.

"Students who remain confined to their hostel rooms or PG accommodation report depressive mood, sleeplessness, tendency to engage in self-injurious behaviours, such as face-slapping or skin-picking, more frequently than those who stay at home," he said.

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi, which recently started its online mental health counselling service, has found that the lockdown is taking a heavy toll on mental health of students. An assessment of 45 students has revealed that a majority of them are suffering from generalised anxiety disorder, restlessness and a sense of hopelessness about their future.

With the help of psychology faculty members, retired professors of psychology and a professional psychiatrist, DU had started the counselling service for its students on April 8.

With the pandemic still raging, different countries are facing different types of recessions - the shape of these will decide how quickly or slowly their economies will rebound

Recently, India crossed 4 million reported cases of COVID-19 and since July, India has had the third-highest number of confirmed cases of any country

SP Jena, professor of Applied Psychology in DU and the person in-charge of the counselling service, informed TOI that they have come across a majority of students with mental health concerns triggered by the lockdown.

"We see two types of cases. In some students, existing mental health problems have exacerbated due to the lockdown-induced restrictions on the free movement. The other type of case involves those whose mental health problems can be linked to the lockdown alone," said Jena.

"However, even those students who are residing at home with their families have complained about suffering from interpersonal problems, including domestic violence," he added.

Pacing around the room, lack of concentration in studies and unexplained crying spell were seen among a few students. Some students have also spoken about their compulsive behaviours like repetitive thinking or repetitive hand-washing.

"Some stay in bed for a considerable amount of time doing nothing and failing to decide what to do. When accompanied by depressive mood state, helplessness or hopelessness and loss of appetite may lead to major depression. In such scenarios, we ask the students to develop a schedule. We tell them to structure their days and talk to people. We even suggest them to write about their issues.”

The DU professor suggests that the mental health counselling started during the lockdown should continue. "Covid-19 is not just a medical problem; it can have serious psychological consequences and cripple productivity. Establishing a viable mental delivery system for the students will take us a long way."
