Answer:

Back in high school, I was an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma student.

IB classes require you to come up with an Internal Assessment (IA), something very much like a research paper (usually accompanied with an experiment if you were taking Chemistry/Biology) that was rigorously looked over by teachers before getting sent to IB headquarters for evaluation towards your diploma.

One of the IA’s I had to do was for my Biology class. I settled for the topic of testing if the intensity of a 60 Hz pulsed magnetic field had any effect on the growth rate of Raphanus raphinistrum, the common Radish vegetable.

I vividly remember having a bright, filament light bulb taped to the bottom of an unused desk over a box of 25 small plastic pots, each with soil and a radish plant. Around each plant was a cardboard tube that was wrapped with wire to generate the magnetic field.

For every night in a month I’d take a ruler, make measurements and note any observable peculiarities (discoloration, wilting, etc.)

I recall all of this fondly because of the sheer amount of time and effort I had to put into it, planning and setting it up, following through with it and hoping I’d get decent marks on it. I’m still proud of that work all these years later and I sometimes find myself wishing I could do another experiment with such dedication.
