Guide (1965)
The best Indian movie till date. Based on the book by R K Narayan (though differs in parts), this movie is a hallmark of Indian cinema's very best
A woman leaves her husband to stay with her lover. a guide. She is not portrayed immoral for her extra marital fling but evokes sympathy. The protagonist of the movie is jailed not because he was falsely implicated but because he has committed a crime (so not like a typical Bollywood movie). The movie also dwells into atheism, something Indian cinema has shied away from. In the year 1965, a Bollywood movie broke shackles and stereotypes to bring a gem of a movie.
The movie has no heroes, no rights, no wrongs. It just celebrates the vivid spectrum of characters while they are on a quest to decipher their inner selves. The movie is full of brilliant paradoxes. While the protagonist (Dev Anand) is a guide, someone who shows the way to people, he himself loses his way in life. While he is someone who has completely lost his faith and is disillusioned, he needs to instill faith in the villagers. While Rosie (Waheeda Rahman) wants to break free from the shackles of marriage and society, she binds herself to to the love of Raju. The movie has a good screenplay, a brilliant plot and amazing character development.
The movie has some of the best songs Indian cinema has produced.
Gaata rahe mera dil
Waha kaun hai tera musafir
Piya tose naina lage re
Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain
Kya se kya ho gaya (Rafi at his best)
Hope it helps you!
