My Lost Story Book

Long-time back my grandmother had gifted me a story book which had belonged to her grandmother. The book was somewhat moth eaten and its pages had turned yellow. But it was my greatest asset. There were twelve stories, each a tale of Goddess Lakshmi. As a little girl I read and re-read the stories over again and could almost narrate it from memory.

If anyone came to visit us I would narrate a story from it. I kept it at the shelf carved in my bed. As I went to college I had to stay in the hostel. Once when I came home I saw our house was being renovated and there was no trace of the book. I searched every nook and corner but there was no trace of it. I was grief stricken. I had lost my favourite book.

Years rolled by. I got married. My husband’s family was a very religious one. They were great worshippers of Goddess Lakshmi. On the eve of Lakshmi Puja as I was helping my mother-in-law with the Puja arrangements I came across a book in the puja room. It was none other than my lost book. The first page still bore my grandmother’s handwriting. I rushed to my mother-in-law with the book in my hand and violently asked her where she got it.

My mother-in-law is a very gentle and peace loving person. She patted my shoulder and said she had picked it up from the person who came to take our used papers. He had brought the book out of his sack to adjust the papers when she had chanced on it and finding it such a good book bought it from him.

I was overjoyed. I burst into tears and hugged her. My lost story book had found me. How happy I was and how grateful I was to Goddess Lakshmi for restoring my valuable possession to me.
