Explanation:
The outbreak of Covid 19 has left the country shut its doors to contain the spread of the corona virus leading to disruption in the lives of people. There’s a large number of ‘Corona Warriors’ going the extra mile to battle the pandemic. They all deserve our thanks and respect. Along with all ‘Corona Warriors’ stand our Teaching community.
The country is immensely proud of the teaching community. Teachers have embraced the present situation with positivity and used it as a growth opportunity. Our teachers have been incredible as they leapt with zeal, commitment and creativity into this new way of online teaching. Teachers are producing online curricula, all while dealing with their own quarantined families. As the corona virus multiplies exponentially, so do the demands on teachers’ schedules, as many schools across the country implement distance learning.
The teachers are mostly facing time management as a constant challenge. During lockdown they are confronted with ever-increasing obligatory meetings and training sessions. These demands are encroaching more than ever on personal time, contributing to burnout. During this challenging time a teacher may find herself emailing or messaging management or parents at as late as 8pm, compared to a working day which used to run from 7.30am to around 2pm. We all know, too much screen time can have vision issues like strained, dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Chronic neck and back pain Studies link heavy computer and smartphone use to increased sleeping issues. The blue light from digital devices suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, keeping us from having restful sleep finally, spending too much screen time leads to less efficient information processing. Our teachers are already over burdened with constant barrage of links, passwords, Google classroom, Zoom, hangout, conducting classes, meeting sessions, PTMs and what not? Why cant the school instruct the parents to call a teacher during scheduled school hour only? Psychologists say lockdowns can not only adversely impact the economy and employment opportunities but also one’s state of mind. Stimulating activities like walking, reading, dancing or singing , board games stimulate the mind, One may also do yoga or dance which releases endorphins in the brain and make us feel happy and content. This is also a time for couples, or even others to improve their relationships with their loved ones. But how many teachers are able to find time to indulge in any such activity? After hours of screen time and constantly being on phone they are left exhausted. Corona virus is taking it’s toll on the teachers.
Online learning is undoubtedly an effective option for students, with digital class meetings and answers to every text, email or message is a way to assure students that teachers are there for them. But aren’t we going overboard? For class V onwards one can understand but parents with little ones are asked to check in for Zoom session everyday. Isn’t it a bit too much? especially for kids in pre primary class? The kids will be fine without the online class. We may even discover that they got a lot out of this time spent hanging out with their parents. Online learning, especially for kids in grade school, should be optional. I also wonder if a family of four would have as many android phones, laptops or PC to work on. If not that means the father has to wait for his turn for the kid to finish with
Online class to work on PC / laptop.
Our schools have undoubtedly done a stellar job of setting up distance learning in no time at a variety of education levels at the same time competition between schools is now an established feature of the education system. In the quest some schools are pushing their workforce to breaking point. Online assembly ,conducting online interviews and test for admission. Come on, lets not overschedule. if CBSE can reduce the curriculum why cant the schools come up with an alternate method like giving admission on the basis of marks obtained in last class? Why make things complicated? Again some schools don’t stop at this- The management guys watch the teachers while they take class online. They ought to have some faith in their teachers. Imagine how stressful it can get for a teacher on being constantly monitored. Online classical music class? We got to be joking as anyone with bit of classical music knowledge shall agree how much a teacher has to check that the student gets the perfect ‘Sa’. How does the music teacher help online is beyond my comprehension. The schools are doing all this for obvious reasons and the overbearing parents for the sake of their children but at the recieving end is the teacher who otherwise would finish her work in 7-8 school hours is made to work till late. We all are understand the need of the hour- Social distancing but with that comes emotional bonding but are our teachers getting any family time?
