India is celebrating its 75th Independence Day this year. August 15 marks India's independence from the British Raj. On 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of independent India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the national flag at the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in New Delhi.

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom," Nehru said in his historic speech to the Constituent Assembly close to the midnight hour on 14 August 1947.
Every year, the day is celebrated every year with cultural programmes, flag-hoisting ceremonies and other competitions, across the country.

This year, the athletes who won medals at Tokyo Olympics 2020 will get special invites for the event.
