National Education Day, India

We at Global Vocational Skills would like to wish everyone a very happy National Education Day in India.

v3

Each year this date commemorates the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Minister of Education. His work to establish a national education system is among his great contributions to the democratic state India operates today.

Azad is noted as one of the pioneering drives behind India’s economic and societal development. He is best known for his goal to bring “Free education for all” in a country with new-found independence, following the departure of British colonial rule. This goal laid the foundation for India’s education future and Azad’s commitment to the cause saw him become Minister of Education between 1947 and 1958, the first individual to take up this role within Indian government. His contributions were recognised formerly by the state when he was awarded, posthumously, the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1992.

The celebrations this year will take the theme of ‘Skill Awareness and Empowerment’. The hope from this is that schools will take active participation in exposing their students to a number of projects, which will help develop essential skills to put towards future careers. Activities such as seminars, essay writing competitions, elocution competitions and a variety of workshops will take place across the nation.

We are excited by this year’s theme for National Education Day as it is more focussed towards students getting skills and knowledge while at school. These skills are often essential for developing a future career. By bringing awareness and a sense of empowerment earlier on in their education, learners can then have a better say in where they take the next stage of their lives; whether it is higher education at college or university, or further education via an apprenticeship scheme or vocational education and training.
