Essay on necessity of air
Answers
Without it life would not be possible as seen on other planets in our Solar system.
Hence air is a natural virtue on earth which sustains life.
Air is a non-visible form of matter which is free flowing and in gaseous state.
The composition of air and its properties can be studied in physics and chemistry.
Air consists of many gases like nitrogen, oxygen, inert gases in varying proportions.
Besides it also has gases likehydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide etc.
It is naturally clean and suitable for human and animal survival. But, due to industrialization there is rise in air pollution, which is not safe for breathe.
So to avail clean air and keep up dust free breathing air condition and air filtration devices are used widely.
Importance of air
1. Essential supplier of energy: All living beings including plants & animals are dependent on air oxygen for generation of valuable life energy. Body cells take up oxygen from blood and generateenergy from food in the form of ATP. This biochemical generation of ATP is a basic requirement to sustain life on earth.
2. Air is a conducting medium for sound: We can hear sound of speech or cry or noise etc. only in the presence of air. This is because air is a good conductor of sound. Without air we do-not or cannot hear sounds.
Even the music instruments make use of resonance and bass with the alteration of air and sound combination.
3. Air supports water cycle: Water cycle is a phenomenon where in water from soil, oceans and seas is evaporated due to Sun’ s heat and form clouds.
These clouds travel on to land surface, get cooled by air and shower as rain. This rain water some how again reaches the Sea’s and Ocean’s. So air helps in transfer or movement of clouds towards the earth surface and also cools them to shower the rain.
Hence we can find heavy rains at places of many trees as air gets cooled there in comparison to deserts.
4. Air helps in pollination of crops: Plants produce male gametes in the form of pollen grains. These pollen travel from male flower to female flower and unite with female gametes. This is called as pollination. This can happen within flowers of the same plant or between distant one’s through air wind. Thus air helps in cross- pollination in plants. Hence forth going into a grown farm causes nasal stuffiness as the pollen cause allergy to nasal tract when breathed in. This helps inagriculture as cross pollination leads to higher yield.
5. Air maintains temperature on the earth surface: During summers when there is heavy sunshine, the temperature of earth’s surface rises rapidly but slowly on ocean or sea surface (this is because solid gets heated faster than liquidwater). So air which gets heated on earth surface rises up and cold air from sea surface moves on to the earth surface thus minimizing the rise in temperature.
6. Bring monsoon: Monsoons are the ones by which we have rains in rainy season. This is done due to currents of wind (air) across the earth surface. Lack of wind can delay monsoons and rains and there by deplete water levels for drinking, irrigation and other usage in our daily lives.
7. Air helps in transport: Air transport by flights and helicopters has come into widespread use. Even for birds and insects air is the chief mode of transport.
Answer:
Air is not an easy and suitable medium to support life (biota) and actually no organism ever originated in air, though, certain aquatic and terrestrial organisms have become secondarily adapted for aerial existence.
Air has so much less buoyancy than water that organisms emerging from water or land are immediately subjected to a stronger pull of gravity which holds them to the earth. They are also exposed to evaporation of water from their bodies, which threaten loss of water from the protoplasm and consequent death due to desiccation.
Changes in temperature are much more drastic in air and there is a greater danger of chilling or overheating. Further, periods of light exposure are much longer and much more intense in air than in water or upland. Even more, the problem of mineral supply becomes acute in air.
Only a few micro-organisms, plants and animals have invaded the air. The essential function of dispersal of fruits and seeds of certain flowering plants is performed by the air currents. These fruits and seeds have various kinds of adaptations for such wind dispersal. Various animals of different groups exhibit adaptations for the aerial mode of life. The animals which can fly in air
