Nelson Mandela was the first black president for South Africa. By the time Nelson Mandela was in college, he was a tall, good-humored young man. His laugh came easily, and he was highly intelligent. He was also an excellent athlete. During his second year of college, he participated in a student strike to protest the poor conditions at school. He was forced to live in a township on the outskirts of the city. The city he lived in wasn’t the best neighborhood. Almost nobody had electricity, indoor toilets, or even garbage collection. Nelson was determined to return to college and become a lawyer, so that he could try and change his society for the better.
