Essay on New Year Celebration

Every country celebrates the new year at a different time of the year. Sometimes based on their own calendar, festivals, astronomic timings, historic event, significant personality etc. Most of the people across the world follow Gregorian calendar, and new year day or the first day of the year is 1st January. Sametime countries like China, Israel, India and others follow local calendars too. In India, there are multiple local calendars too and they celebrate new year accordingly. For example, Maharashtrian people observe
new year on the first day of Hindu Calendar and it is called Gudi Padwa. Ugadi, a Telugu, and Kannada new year fall between the month of March and April. Punjabis celebrate Baisakhi/Vaisakhi on 14th April based on Nanakshahi Calendar.

History of New Year

New year’s day was celebrated in 45 B.C. for the first time. At that time, it was more of calendar adjustment than a celebration.

Julius Caesar, Roman dictator decided to reform failing Roman calendar which was introduced in 7th century B.C. It was based on the lunar cycle, it used to fell out of phase frequently with the seasons and had to be corrected. Sosigenes, an Alexandrian astronomer advised using solar cycles like Egyptians. The year was adjusted by adding 67 Days to 45 B.C. making January 1, as first of year 46 B.C. instead of March. He also decided to add to 1 day to February every four years to keep the calendar on track.

Still, there was an error in year calculation which was noted by The Roman Church in 1570’s. In 1582, the Gregorian calendar was introduced; since then January 1 is celebrated as the precise arrival of new year.
