Oil Conservation

Oil is a resource that man has taken for granted. He is wasting oil without realising the fact that it is one of our key factors of survival. Since the development of industries from the fifteenth century, oil is used to manufacture almost every object that we see around till date. Oil not only is a liquid that we use for cooking but it is also an origin of a great variety of fuels. Oil is used either as a component or as a tool to make products ranging from plastic articles to various food items. It is used to power automobile engines as well as used as fuel in LPG Cylinders. It is expected that we may run out of these natural resources by 2090. Many countries that are exporters of oil could’ve suffered a huge economic loss if oil wasn’t there in the required quantity. Then why waste it?

Conservation of oil is the more efficient use of oil that would bring forth social, environmental and economical benefits. The better use of oil would not only aid our finances but would also make the environment cleaner.

Here are a few steps one can take to reduce the consumption of oil or it’s by-products:

• Turning the gas of the stove off when boiling is reached.

• Make the use of lower gas more frequent.

• Use vessels and other containers with large bottoms so that heat gets distributed evenly and lesser amount of oil is used.

• Eat at once the food is prepared to avoid repeated use of the stove for warming.

• Avoid oily foods as it would benefit in the form of better health as well as conservation of oil.

• While travelling, tune your automobile regularly to prevent overuse of fuel and better mileage at low fuel consumption.

• Switch to the appropriate gear respective to the situations where you are travelling. Such as in cities, don’t use low gears as it uses more fuel than required.

• Never forget to turn off the engine when there is a halt of more than a minute.

• According to surveys and research, it was found out that nearly 994 crores worth of fuel is used up at red lights. Such an amount can be used to reduce the burden of taxes on the government.

• Make the use of public transport more frequent and prefer car pooling. Don’t use automobiles except cycles or other eco-friendly automobiles when travelling short distances. Walking or cycling would even make us physically fit.

A common issue among the masses is that people think about how they are wasting oil and why should they conserve it. It is righteous as people are not aware about this issue. So, companies and organisations can hold events to make the people aware about this issue and also promote the conservation of this rich resource. Educating children is also a high priority for promoting the conservation of oil, as children carry this idea forward to the future generations.

We can also increase the use of alternatives as it would prevent the usage of natural resources. Fuels such as Bio Fuel, Hydrogen fuel, Wind energy, Tidal energy, Solar energy, Vegetable oil are some examples of alternatives.

Most importantly, don’t blame it all on the government or other people for the usage of oil. Followed by the saying of Gandhi Ji, “Be the change you want to be”, always strive to first improve your own habits and then expect others to do so. We can save this precious planet by doing small acts, but with consistency, which would definitely bring about a major difference.
