Firstly, what is considered organic must be considered. What classifies a product as organic relies solely on how the product was grown, if it was in a natural way with no growth hormones or harmful chemicals. People who tend to eat organic food as opposed to non-organic do so for a variety of reasons. For a product to be classified as organic, it simply must fall under a certain amount of pesticides used, which means organic food may contain pesticides and other chemicals just not a significant amount as compared to conventional foods. In fact, if one does see a USDA approved organic tag this means that just “about 70% of the ingredients in the product except salt and water are organic” (Matthews). In addition to this there is no scientific evidence that backs the notion that organic foods will make a healthier lifestyle. Organic foods much like conventional foods are still exposed to contamination by E. Coli. Studies show that organic foods may not be the better counterpart on counts of nutritional health benefits. “Most organic products are prone to food borne illnesses, within recent years organic food recalls have risen, however they still only account for 10 percent of all food recalls” (Ferreira). This among other reasons may be why some people don’t like to consume organic foods, a big argument amongst the anti-organic community is the fact that they claim there is little evidence to prove that organic foods are more nutritious than conventional foods.
