Giant pandas are among the rarest mammals in the world. There are probably less than 1,000 left in the wild. Although adult giant pandas have few natural enemies, the young are sometimes preyed upon by leopards. Habitat encroachment and destruction are the greatest threats to the continued existence of the giant panda. This is mainly because of the demand for land and natural resources by China's 1 billion inhabitants. To offset this situation, the Chinese government has set aside 11 nature preserves where bamboo flourishes and giant pandas are known to live.
Giant pandas are being poached, because their dense fur carries a high price in illegal markets in the Far East. The Chinese government has imposed life sentences for those convicted of poaching giant pandas. The low reproductive capacity of the giant panda makes it more vulnerable to these threats, and less capable of rebounding from its low numbers. In 1984, due to its decreasing numbers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the giant panda as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. This means it is considered in danger of extinction throughout all of its range.

The giant panda has the body of a typical bear but its fur is rather distinctive. The animals coat is white and has black patches on its ears, eyes, muzzle, legs, and shoulders. The bears coat is thick, wooly, and shields the bear by keeping it warm in cool forests. Giant pandas have strong jaws and large molar teeth to help it when chomping tough bamboo. A giant pandas teeth have been modified over years to specialize in chewing bamboo. A special feature the giant panda has on its paws is a "pseudo thumb”. This is formed by a lengthened and enlarged wrist bone covered with a fleshy pad of skin. They use this special feature to grasp bamboo stems. This stem stands about two to three feet tall and can reach from four up to six feet long. The average male giant panda weighs approximately two hundred and fifty pounds if in the wild. The summer they travel to higher elevation to stay cool. It is common for the female giant pandas to be in the sun, while the cubs climb trees, and the male panda protects the territory. Males make markings on trees to show territoriality. They will defend their territory till the death if necessary. A panda usually eats while sitting upright, in a pose that resembles how humans sit on the floor. Wild giant pandas get much of the water they need from bamboo but giant pandas need more water than what bamboo alone can deliver. Therefore nearly every day wild pandas drink fresh water from rivers and streams. A wild giant panda’s diet is almost ninety nine bamboo. The balance consists of other grasses and occasional small rodents.
