Over the course of the years, parents are always the ones who teach us right from wrong and care for us, always assuring us that they know best and that everything they do is for our best interest. But to most of us, this sounds completely absurd and ridiculous. As teenagers, we want our own independence and want to do things for ourselves even if it means making a few mistakes along the way. Parents can’t see that sometimes making our own mistakes is good for us and will help us grow as people and even find it hard to admit it when they know that they are wrong. Their belief that they know best always overrides whatever argument you put forth towards them. I believe that there is just no winning with parents.
Even if you know that you are right, most parents will not be willing to admit that they themselves have made a mistake. Instead of addressing the real underling problem they simply make you go clean something or do some other meaningless task to distract from the fact that they have erred. Through countless arguments with my own parents, I have learned this the hard way and it has caused me many boring weekend nights, nights that I could’ve been out having fun with my friends now having to be spent in a room simply because I would not stay quiet and happened to point out a mistake on my parents’ part.
Granted on most subjects, parents are usually right and have lived through many of the things that we are now living through. And although their help is intentionally good-willed, we need to learn how to live our own lives our own way. Sheltering us and protecting us from the world will not help us survive once we are completely on our own. In the end, however, it is the parents who have the last say in things. It is the parents who decide whether or not they have made a mistake. It is the parents who will always end up winning simply because they are the authoritative figure. This is why I believe that there is no winning with parents.
