PARENTS are spending more time with their children than they did 40 years ago, despite working harder than ever, according to researchers.
Challenging the common view that busy modern parents neglect their offspring, they found that they spent 90 minutes a day with them compared with only 31 minutes in 1961.
While time devoted to household chores had dropped, the number of minutes devoted to helping children with their homework had grown, according to the study by the Future Foundation on behalf of Abbey National.
It claimed that parents of 40 years ago spent only a minute a day helping children with their schoolwork. This figure had now increased to 15 minutes.
As well as spending more time with their families, parents also devoted more time to themselves, said the Future Foundation, which interviewed 965 people.
