In the present era, on the one hand, man takes pride in his achievements and control over natural forces and on the other hand he is trying to find ways by which he can undo the damage he has caused due to his wantonly exploiting the resources which he had to share with other species of the planet. Behind his success lies the dark reality of the harm he has done to Mother Nature. Pollution of land, water and air has increased to an extent where our planet, the only planet to sustain life, is losing its capacity to sustain life.

Pollution of land has made it infertile and barren. The flora and fauna of once beautiful expanses of land is depleting, making numerous plant and animals endangered. The dense forest has been converted into concrete jungle or desert and rivers have become scanty.

Water pollution, caused by industrial wastes, has threatened aquatic life and many species are on the verge of extinction. Once life-giving rivers have been turned muddy and unsafe to use. Scarcity of fresh water is coming as a grave concern for governments as well as people.

Acid rain, holes in ozone layer, smog and toxins in the air have rendered it unsafe and the time is not far when we'll have to keep masks on 24 x 7 or carry oxygen cylinder to survive.

If we don't heed the clarion call we are in for the doom. The only solution is to leave our greed aside and learn to respect nature in all its form to co-operate and co-exist .

Answer:

Pollution: Earth Enemy Number One......

Pollution is the damage caused to the environment by harmful substances or waste . Pollution is our enemy number one today . Modern civilization and material progress have resulted in pollution everywhere – in the atmosphere , on land , in the seas and in the rivers .

Our air is polluted by smoke , gases and chemicals emitted by vehicles and factories . This pollution poisons the air and harms the ozone layer of the earth that protects us from the radiation of the sun . If the ozone layer is destroyed , mankind will perish . Nuclear radiation also pollutes the air causing terrible health hazards . Besides this , there is noise pollution in big cities caused by vehicles , machine , loudspeakers and crackers .

Tonnes of industrial and chemical waste are thoughtlessly dumped into our rivers , lakes and seas and they kill fish and other marine life . Unplanned growth of cities brings about more and more slums , where dirt , disease and death breed .

Pollution continues to increase as a result of the increasing number of motor vehicles on the roads . Exhaust fumes from the engines of automobiles contain a number of polluting substances . According to Taking A Stand Against Environmental Pollution by Newton , most of the substances that are harmful are : carbon monoxide and a variety of complex hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides . When exposed to sunlight , these substances undergo a change in their composition . As a result the substances produce the brown , toxic , smog .

We must take immediate and effective steps to fight pollution . We must reduce vehicular and factory smoke . We must stop the dumping of chemical waste into our rivers , lakes and seas . We must grow more trees , protects our forests , and have more gardens and open spaces . The sooner effective steps are taken the better it will be for mankind.
