Ram Navami is a Hindu festival which celebrates the birth of Lord Ram. Lord Ram is a major god in Hindu religion known for killing the demon Ravana. His story is written in Ramayana. This festival is celebrated in spring season.

People in India celebrate this festival in different ways. Many people fast on this day and eat only fruits until night time. Some visit a temple while others pray in their homes. People also pray with music and dance which is known as ‘kirtan’. People sing songs to praise lord Ram. The icon of baby lord Ram is also worshipped. They wash it and put new clothes on it. Many people give food and clothes to the poor.

This festival is very important in some states like Uttar Pradesh (Ayodhya), Bihar, Telangana, Tamil Nadu (Rameswaram). Rathayatras are taken out in many places. In this, statues of Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman and goddess Sita is placed on a chariot. This chariot is decorated with lights and flowers and then taken from one place to another with great joy.

Fruit juice and food are distributed. Some people also celebrate it as a marriage anniversary of Ram and Sita. Both of them are decorated as bride and groom.

Lord Ram is everywhere known as an ideal figure who stands for truth, justice and humility. Every year Ram Navami reminds us of the glory of our past.
