Media plays a crucial role in shaping a healthy democracy. It is the backbone of a democracy. Media makes us aware of various social, political and economical activities happening around the world. It is like a mirror, which shows us or strives to show us the bare truth and harsh realities of life.

Media, being the fourth pillar of democracy, plays an important role in the functioning of the democracy. Media, be it print or electronic, has a role to highlight the opinion and grievances of the citizens to the government. Thus, it facilitates the interaction between the government and its people.

During the freedom struggle, the revolutionaries started newspapers to make the masses aware of the sinister policy of the British Government. The people revolted and finally, a mighty empire has to face its waterloo. Such is the power of media that it can make or break a whole civilization.

However, in recent times, questions are being raised on the neutrality of media. There have been several instances when the media seemed to have acted on the behest of their political masters. The recent Facebook – Cambridge analytical controversy exposed the nexus corporates and politicians. Also, questions are raised that the Indian media is getting involved in election manoeuvring and changing the mood of the citizenry for and against a particular party. Such instances dent the image of a democracy.
