The employees of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) have decided to intensify the strike even as an employee of Khammam depot was admitted to hospital with 80 per cent burn injuries after he attempted to immolate himself. His health condition is said to be critical. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who held a review meeting on Saturday to take stock of the situation, held the unions responsible for the loss of jobs of 48,000 employees.

He said the government would rope in temporary staff to man all the buses. But the government could so far manage to operate about 20 per cent of the fleet in the State capital. Reports reaching here indicate that the bus services in the districts have been hit.

               Essay on TSRTC strike:

Employees of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) on Sunday has gone on an indefinite strike since the 5th of October 2019 to press for their demands, the foremost being the merger of the unit with the govt.

Over 48,000 workers of TSRTC have been on strike since the 5th of October 2019 pressing for 26 demands, the foremost being the merger of TSRTC with the govt. so that TSRTC employees are treated on par with the govt. employees. The demand arose after the loss-making Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) was merged with the govt. in the neighboring state. After talking to leaders of various opposition parties and trade unions with regard to the future course of, JAC convenor Mr. Ashwathama Reddy made the announcement.

In last 41 days, Mr. Reddy accused the government of the death of 23 workers. He stated that the government had even rejected the suggestion by the High Court fora committee of 3 retired Supreme Court judges to help resolve the standoff. Mr. Reddy alleged that the KCR govt. is attempting to subdue the strike by resorting to arrest of numerous workers. He demanded the immediate release of all those detained (TSRTC workers). The JAC announcement came one day after a protesting worker died due to depression  while a another worker  was hospitalized because of cardiac arrest . A driver had also committed suicide.

The government, however, called the strike unconstitutional, ignored the proposal for merger and excluded talks with the workers. The TSRTC officers held a series of discussions with JAC members on certain requests excluding the merger application, following the intervention of the High Court. But it could not break the deadlock. The government also did not accept the suggestion for merger with the government. On the 41st day of the strike, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the striking employees decided to drop the merger demand for now and offered to hold talks with the government on other demands .
