Essay on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel the Iron Man of India
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel known as the “Iron Man of India” was born on 31 October, 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was one of the most successful Indian barrister and statesman, prominent leader of Indian National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India who played a leading role in the country’s struggle for independence and integration of country. Because of his strong leadership and fearlessness he was addressed as Sardar.
Patel got his early education in Karamsad. Later he went to England to study law and returned to India in 1915. He successfully practised law at Godhra, Borsad and Anand in Gujarat. Patel was deeply inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1931 he was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress. Patel joined Non-Cooperation Movement started by Gandhi and recruit 3, 00,000 members and Rs 1.5 million for party fund during his travel to West India. Patel was a great social reformer who worked extensively against alcohol consumption, untouchability, caste discrimination and for women emancipation in Gujarat and outside. He unified India as none other. When Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned, he led the Satyagraha movement in Nagpur in 1923 against the British law of banning the hoisting of the Indian Flag.
As India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Patel played a key role in the integration of the princely states. He died on Friday 15 December, 1950 at Birla House in Bombay but his memories are still alive in our heart.
