India celebrated national girl child day on January 24 ..but still girl child remains uncherished as ever ,more in punjab which had worst sex ratios in the country.. Discrimination against girl child is widespread in the state that even her health is not a priority. According to information gathered under RTI act ,number of girl children taken to treatment to hospitals in punjab is atleast 25%lower than boys.in some district s the situation is more dismal ,revealing deep rooted bias against daughters.it is shocking that even in 21st century girls are not treated on a par with boys and denied basic needs such as a proper healthcare The government and societe have been trying to fight gender bias through various schemes ..in punjab initiative s like SGPC's nanhi chhaon and govt schemes like balri rakshak yojna ,a welfare scheme for cause of the girl child ,may have made some headway in denting prejudices. Still ,by and large ,the obbession for the male child shows little signs of abating ..with this abdominable practice of female foeticide is still rampant ,bias againstvthe female child persists in many other ways and has affected the nutritional status of girl child It is imperiative that policies lay greater emphasis on the girl's health care ..indeed,there is need to go beyond tokenism..observing national girl child day may seem significant but will not be able to transform patriachal mindsets that continue to value sons over daughters ...what is needed is a movement against female foeticide ..while society has to be wake up to menace of female foeticide and redress the gender imbalance,parents too much learn to cherish and value their daughters as much as sons.daughters must not onlt be given the right to livr but also must have given equal rights,including right to a healthy life .
