SERICULTURE or SILK FARMING is the rearing of silk worms for the production of SILK. Although there are several commercial species of silk worms ,BOMBYX MORI is the most widely used and intensively studied silk worm .Silk was first produced in china as the NEOLITHIC PERIOD . Sericulture has become an important COTTAGE INDUSTRIES in countries such as Brazil , China , India , France , Italy , Japan , Korea and Russia . today , China and India are the two main producers of silk , With more than 60 % of world's annual production .

HISTORY :

In the 6th century the smuggling of silkworm eggs into BYZANTINE EMPIRE , Lead into establish in the Mediterranean , remaining a monopoly in the BYZANTINE EMPIRE for centuries. In 1147 , During the second crusade ,Roger II of Sicily (1095-1154) attacked CORINTH and THEBES, Two important cities of BYZANTINE SILK PRODUCTION, Capturing the weavers and their equipment and establishing his own silkworks in PALERMO and CALABRIA , Eventually spreading the industry to western europe. 

STAGES OF PRODUCTION :
1.The silk worm lays thousands of eggs .
2.The silk moth eggs hatches to form larvae or caterpillar. 
3.then the moth feeds on mulberry leaves.
4.it produces a thin thread kind of thing which then gets spinned around its body.
5. then after a week the dry coocoon in brushed and then put to boil.
