Bankim Chatopadhyay as an inspiration to the freedom fighters……

Sh. Bankim Chatterjee was also known as Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay. He was born on June 27, 1838, in Kantalpara, Bengal in a Brahmin family. He was a brilliant student both in school and college. Apart from his studies, he used to take interest in reading other books during leisure. He was one of the greatest poets and novelists of his time.


Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was studying in the Presidency college of Calcutta in 1857, when the revolt against the rule of East India Company was in full force but he managed to finish his degree course in 1859. He was appointed Deputy Collector in the same year by the Governor of Calcutta. He was a dedicated worker in the government service for 32 years and retired in 1891.


Bankim Chandra Chatterjee inspired the country with his poems and novels. He was known then as the ‘Literary King of Bengal’. His most significant contribution to the nation was the song ‘Bande Mataram’ from his book ‘ Anandmath’ which was adopted as our National Song ‘Vande Mataram’. This inspired the whole country by its message.


The Indian spiritual heritage was a great inspiration for Bankim Chatterjee which were reflected in his books and in turn, were a great inspiration and appeal to the freedom fighters of the time. His works bear a testimony for nationalism along with an added value of Indian culture and heritage. His popular book ‘Kamala Kanter Dafter’ remarked on the blind beliefs and social evils prevalent then in Indian society which led to injustice to the poor and the downtrodden.  He also recommended remedial measures to eradicate such social evils.


His famous book ‘Anandmath’ portrays his revolutionary ideas against the British. They were a great inspiration for the people of India especially the freedom fighters. His greatest contribution to the   country is more through his literary work.
