In space, no one can hear you scream. This is because there is no air in space – it is a vacuum. Sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum.

'Outer space' begins about 100 km above the Earth, where the shell of air around our planet disappears. With no air to scatter sunlight and produce a blue sky, space appears as a black blanket dotted with stars.

Space is usually regarded as being completely empty. But this is not true. The vast gaps between the stars and planets are filled with huge amounts of thinly spread gas and dust. Even the emptiest parts of space contain at least a few hundred atoms or molecules per cubic metre.

Space is also filled with many forms of radiation that are dangerous to astronauts. Much of this infrared and ultraviolet radiation comes from the Sun. High energy X-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays – particles travelling close to the speed of light – arrive from distant star systems.

Explanation:

There are various advantages of space exploration, which makes nations foray into it. Firstly such scientific explorations help us understand our universe better, and these explorations provide with important data that helps us in understanding various phenomena of the world. Due to space programs nations have been able to send satellites into space which have helped in improving technology immensely. The advancement of technology has been aided by the satellites in various areas like weather forecasting, navigation and improvement in communications. Satellite images help in tracking pollution levels and the data gathered from the space is extremely useful as it gives humans a perspective of the Earth which is easily accessible and has a lot of clarity. Space agencies like NASA and other space agencies of the world continue to explore our planet and the universe providing valuable information for the growth of humankind.

However, on the other side, there are various pressing issues that nations face like tackling problems related to poverty, public health and climate change which need immediate attention and allocation of funds. Governments need to prioritise and see that important matters are taken care of before they look into spending exorbitant amounts into space exploration. Many of the developed countries already have a lot in terms of infrastructural development that needs to be looked into, and they cannot afford to spend on space programs putting essential services on hold. However, we have the example of Indian space agency ISRO which was able to achieve great success in space exploration on a limited budget and contributed immensely in the advancement in telecommunications of its country.
