Atal Bihari Vajpayee' was born on December 25, 1924 at Shinde Cantt in Madhya Pradesh. His father's name was Krishna Bihari Vajpayee.His grandfather Pandit Shyam Lal Vajpayee was an eminent Sanskrit scholar.

Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in as the thirteenth Prime Minister of free India on March 19, 1998 as the head of multi-party coalition. He had also sworn in as the nation’s tenth Prime Minister on May 16, 1996, but he had to resign after remaining 13 days in power when he failed to prove his majority on the floor of the house.
Mr. Vajpayee was born on Christmas Day, the 25th December in 1926 at Gawalior. His father Mr. Krishna Bihari Vajpayee was a school teacher and Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee completed his graduation in Gawalior itself. As a student he came in contact with RSS and became an RSS functionary. His initiation ‘into politics started then and there. He did his post-graduation in political science from Kanpur University and later worked as a journalist with RSS magazine ‘Rashtradharam’. In 1941 he joined the Bhartiya Rashtriya Congress and was jailed during 1942 Quit India Movement.
In later years Vajpayee edited the Chetna Saptahik from Varanasi, Dainik Swadeshi from Lucknow and Vir Arjun from Delhi. He took his first steps in politics in 1955 when he contested from Lucknow seat and was defeated. Now he has won from this very seat and reached the Prime Minister’s position.
Mr. Vajpayee entered the Lok Sabha for the eight times including the just concluded elections. He first stepped into Lok Sabha in 1957. He has also been a member of Rajya Sabha twice from 1962-67 and 1986-89. From 1968-73 he headed erstwhile Junagarh and later merged into Janta Party in 1977. He became the first BJP’s chief after Janta’s split. During the emergency he was jailed along with all the top opposition leaders.
After emergency he was appointed External Affairs Minister and was credited with making Indo-Pak relationship cordial. During his tenure he also set a record by becoming the first ever Indian Minister to have addressed the UN General Assembly in Hindi. He was awarded India’s second highest civilian award Padama Vibhushan in 1992 and in 1994 he won the best parliamentarian award. In 1993 he again scored a diplomatic victory when he led Indian delegation to Human Rights Commission Meeting in Geneva. He was also the member of India’s United Nations General Assembly delegation in 1988, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 and 96.
Mr. Vajpayee is a selfless social worker, also has a graceful taste for poetry, music and cinema. He has written many books and his collection of poem ‘Meri Eqyavan Kavitaayian’ is his foremost.
Mr. Vajpayee is a leader with a clean political image. He is much admired orator and also a warm persuasive leader. By reaching his top position he had proved the prophecy of Pandit Nehru True.
A hung parliament as well as the serious problem facing the nation would require sustained efforts by Mr. Vajpayee to take other parties along with him. He will also have to ensure that there are regular and meaningful consultations with other political parties. Mr. Vajpayee has already displayed his competence in choosing his team of Ministers. Representation had been given to periodically every section of society and to almost every state. He is constantly consulting the opposition and trying to get its co-operation. His Bus Diplomacy whereby he travelled to Pakistan in bus to seek lasting peace with Pakistan, India’s erstwhile part and his declaration of no-first use of nuclear option as also destruction of nuclear arsenal provided there is full disarmament of nuclear weapons, are some of his illustrations of his peaceful intentions. Now again Prime Minister agree to re-start Bus from Delhi to Lahore after it was closed when Parliament was attacked. This shows Vajpayee’s commitment to peace and friendly relationship with Pakistan.
